TBTS: Statement regarding publishing
London. August 18th, 2009.
Statistics released by the Publishers Information Bureau recently recorded that advertising revenues for the last quarter are down nearly 22% on the same period last year.
As Traditional Boats & Tall Ships Magazine is a small, niche title this downturn has had a devastating effect on the advertising revenues that have been achieved so far this year. It is these monies that allow us to be able to fund and retain the quality of print, editorial and design that you have come to expect since we re-launched last year.
So in order to protect the title from the risk of closure, we have taken the decision to place the magazine on hold for the short-term future. While the title sits ‘in hibernation’ we will not be taking any new subscriptions or renewals of existing subscriptions.
This has not been an easy decision to take, but it is one that will hopefully safeguard some future for the magazine. I thank all of the subscribers in advance for their support and patience during this difficult and unfortunate time.

Spring 2009 Issue has been delayed
The publication of the Spring 2009 issue of Traditional Boats & Tall Ships Magazine has been temporarily delayed due to circumstances outside of our control.
It is expected that the Spring issue will be with you before the end of April.

Traditional Boats & Tall Ships
Our features include Sam Jefferson telling the tall tale of 'Bully' Waterman and his hell ship Challenge, while Jamie Campbell has a look at working on your own traditional boat. We focus on the tall ship Picton Castle, the early days of the SS Robin and the ever-popular Kathleen & May, which is currently for sale in her native Bideford. Our photo start is of the Stavros S Niarchos leaving Liverpool; this sets the tone for our report on this year's Tall Ships' Races.
Celebrating the 250th birthday of admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, we take a brief look at the life and times of Britain's most important naval hero. He was impetuous, zealous and melodramatic: he was also audaciously lucky, fiercely patriotic and tactically inspired. Taking in his early years and his major battles, this feature is brought to life by stunning images from the Norfolk Nelson Museum and the Royal Naval Museum.
In our regular features, Duncan Wells looks at tackle and the difference between true and apparent windspeed. Around the Coastline takes in the vast mudflat of Morecambe Bay, and Kenneth Grant is the schoolboy painter with an Eye for Art. Slipway brings you the best of forthcoming festivals and exhibitions, while Stern View precedes the London Rumfest with a wee word about grog. We also round up the latest maritime book reviews and sail training news.

Traditional Boats & Tall Ships no.52
It's that time again - the August/September issue of Traditional Boats & Tall Ships goes on sale from 31st July 2008.
The cover story of this 52nd edition of the magazine is ‘The European Way’ by Commander John Paton. Way back in our 50th issue, John looked at the state of British maritime heritage – this time, he turns his eye to the approach taken by some of our European neighbours. In a similar vein, we’ve got the story of Boy Leslie, the Brixham trawler now found in Scandinavia – and an in-depth look at the Swedish connection with the sea, including the work of Fredrik Henrik af Chapman, now widely acknowledged as the ‘father of naval architecture’. Regular contributor Jamie Campbell looks at the fascinating history of the sadly forgotten Beach Yawl, and staying on the east coast, the old fishing port of Great Yarmouth is our focus going ‘around the coast’.
Our tall ships features include the story of the great survivor Belem, now plying a trade transporting wine from France, and Pelican of London, the very modern tall ship with a sail plan taken from the Barbary pirates! Sam Jefferson returns with tall tales of the opium clippers, and Eric and Ray Cowell sing out for the Forebitter – the true sailors’ sea songs. Dr Alan Platt brings us more on the hapless City of Adelaide, and Merseyside artist Edward D Walker is our maritime painter with an ‘eye for art’.

Tall Ships Races' 2008 underway!
The Tall Ships Races' 2008 got underway on Monday under conditions that were equally blustery, sunny and overcast; the same winds that had kept the golfers on their toes at Royal Birkdale sadly prevented many vessels from setting canvas for the Parade of Sail. Several skippers were clearly champing at the bit, though: Pelican of London and Alexander von Humboldt had both removed the harbour stow from several yards in readiness, while Stavros S. Niarchos set most of her jibs and staysails - so too Cuauhtémoc, who set off several gun blasts in passing the Liver Buildings. Cadets from the irresistible Royalist manned the yard arms, the Girl Guides from Lord Nelson waved and laughed, and several of the Omani Sultanate's Shabab Oman were dressed in full dress kilts in reference to her Scottish build. Given the conditions, braver souls than me manned the yards of the gigantic Dar Mlodziezy, the fireship Trafalgar blasted sky-high water cannons, there was a fly-by of Yakelov stunt planes and a helicopter scudded low circuits over the fleet before landing on Lyme Bay. HMS Argyll was in attendance, as were many Mersey ferries - not to mention many tens of thousands of happy spectators!
The fleet is bound for Northern Ireland, where the official race begins on Wednesday 23rd July. The first leg of the competition is to Maloy in Norway, where the ships will assemble between Friday 1st and Monday 4th August. Then the cruise-in-company brings the fleet to Bergen from Saturday 9th to Tuesday 12th August - and the second leg of the race heads for Den Helder in the Netherlands, where the tall ships will celebrate between Wednesday 20th and Saturday 23rd August.
If I was a betting man, I'd wager on Pelican, Christian Radich, Statsraad Lehmkuhl and Sorlandet as four of the Top Five... anyone think different?
I've also decided that the TS Royalist might just be my favourite ship of all time. So there.

Traditional Boats & Tall Ships 51 set to sail
After the succesful 'spring clean' of Traditional Boats & Tall Ships with Issue 50, we're delighted to announce that Issue 51 is soon to hit the shelves. For the June/July edition, our cover star is La Florette. She is probably the world's oldest working brigantine, and the story of the 'Grand Old Lady' is told in full.
Joining her in Issue 51 is the remarkable Lord Nelson, run by the Jubilee Sailing Trust and sailing into this year's Tall Ships' Races with an all-female crew. Sam Jefferson explores the life of driven clipper captain Richard Robinson, and Martin Pilkington tells the story of John Spencer Dewhurst, the Lancaster 'lad' who ran away to sea at the age of 30. Jamie Campbell takes us through the past, present and hopeful future of City of Edinboro, the historic fishing smack recently acquired by the Excelsior Trust, while the second of our 'Around the coast' features takes us to the whaling, herring and pirates of Stromness in the Orkneys. The prolific and talented Frank Gardiner is our marine painter with an 'eye for art'. We travel to Portugal to discover the rioutous annual Barco Rabelo Boat Race, and take the 'Road to Rouen' to find out more about this year's Armada. We also have a look at the business of corporate sail currently throwing a lifeline to some historic sailing ships.
On top of all these features is our usual round-up of Barge & Smack news, a new, regular column on Sail Training, readers' letters, our calendar and 'Slipway' of forthcoming events, the first devilishly hard crossword from Tony Sutcliffe and Duncan Wells sheds some light on maritime terms. Phew!
