According to the Irish Times last week, the state is currently assessing the viability of commissioning a new official training vessel to replace the Asgard II. The recently departed vessel very sadly sank in the Bay of Biscay a couple of weeks ago and now sits in 90m (295ft) of water. Various reports have been circulating that suggest that perhaps the Asgard II might be raised from the deep, but until the report into her demise has been completed by the French and Irish authorities this has been deemed unlikely.
Another option being looked at is the possibility that the Jeanie Johnston, most recently seen at this year's PSP Southampton Boat Show, could assume the role of state training vessel for the short-term.
