As part of May's Museums and Galleries Month, museums within the Maritime Heritage East Partnership chose to launch their new website, uniting maritime collections and organisations across the East of England. Museums in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex have formed a unique partnership to present their collections online. Visitors to the website will be able to find out about the individual museums involved, explore online exhibitions and journey through 'Themes' which unite the collections.
The website was developed in response to a growing interest in local history and a strong public attachment to the sea and our maritime heritage. There is an equally strong desire to see our histories told in new and relevant ways that are meaningful for today’s audiences, and thus the website is designed to open up a dialogue between online visitors and the museums. Members of the public are encouraged to leave comments for the museums and submit their own photos, memories and knowledge which can be incorporated into the ‘Themes’ section of the website.
The website not only seeks to promote and protect regional maritime identity but also bring together collections across the regions and celebrate the contribution that maritime heritage has made to the heritage of the East of England.
